Why People Seek Low Back Pain Treatment in Winter
- Falls on the Ice
- Scooping Snow
- Skiing/Snowboarding and Sledding Accidents
In the middle of winter with spring still a couple of months away, our back doctors continue to treat patients needing low back pain treatment. Fun-filled winter activities can often lead to severe lower back pain. Take a minute to understand the risks and how to stay safe so you can enjoy the rest of the season.
Lower Back Injuries from Falling on the Ice
Whether you’re ice skating and you missed your landing on your “triple luxe jump” or you’re just walking out to your car in the morning and slip and fall in your driveway, let’s face it: falling on the ice hurts. The force of your body falling onto the ice can greatly affect back alignment. Other injuries include tailbone fractures and even wrist injuries. If you find yourself hurting after you regain your balance, it’s best to consider getting an exam or even low back treatment from a chiropractor.
Lower Back Injuries from Scooping Snow
It’s fun to look outside your window and see a soft blanket freshly fallen snow.
Everyone loves a “White Christmas.”
But, scooping snow is physically demanding exercise. It can lead to strains and sprains in your low back, and a need for low back pain treatment.
Tips for preventing injuries while shoveling:
- Wear solid, heavy boots with some tread to prevent slipping.
- Warm up your body before heading out. Carefully stretch your arms, hamstrings and hips.
- Scoop small amounts of snow at a time instead of trying to lift a huge mound! If you have a large pile of snow, divide it into layers and tackle one at a time. A shovel of wet snow can weigh as much as 20 pounds!
- Lift with your legs – not your back. Bend at the knees and keep your spine aligned as much as possible. Maintain proper back alignment when you’re squatting and lifting.
- Take breaks and drink water. Most injuries happen when you become tired and less focused on moving correctly.
Lower Back Injuries from Skiing, Snowboarding and Sledding Accidents
Many winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding can cause injuries that require back therapy and back treatments. Often, these are caused by the twisting motions required to get down the mountain. Common sledding injuries include headaches, knee and ankle injuries caused by running into a tree or another stationary object. If you find yourself laying on the snow – not quite sure what happened, a visit to a chiropractor can ensure that you don’t have any serious injuries.
Don’t let the risks stop you from enjoying the outdoors, though.
Just keep in mind the possible injuries and be smart when you’re out there!
