SAFEHOME | Support for Survivors of Domestic Violence
Since 2005 Fulk Chiropractic’s Kansas City chiropractors have provided complementary chiropractic care to women and children who have been victims of domestic violence. They provide victims with complimentary treatment for neck pain, back injury treatment, complete physical exams and X-rays.
“It’s an honor to partner with SAFEHOME,” explained Dr. Jeff Spoonemore. “They are an incredible organization, dedicated to serving our community. We want to do everything we can to support their efforts.”
Treatment for Neck Pain
Fulk’s Kansas City chiropractors provide natural treatment for neck pain by uncovering the cause of the pain through a thorough consultation and exam and then providing chiropractic adjustments and physical therapy, allowing the body to slowly return to full health.
Back Injury Treatment
Back injury treatments are very similar in that the doctor must first determine the cause of the back pain or injury and then prescribe a course of treatment to return the spine and nerves to their normal function.
SAFEHOME Advocates Educate Fulk Chiropractic’s Chiropractors
Fulk Chiropractic doctors and staff recently welcomed SAFEHOME advocates of the Education & Prevention division to educate staff members on how to help a victim of domestic violence, domestic violence lethality factors as well as the dynamics and impact of domestic violence in Johnson County. Education is key to prevention, and we’re thankful for the knowledge and compassion of SAFEHOME advocates.
The SAFEHOME story: SAFEHOME traces its beginnings to one late evening in 1979 when Martha Hunt opened her front door to find a neighbor, bruised and bleeding, with her two small children. The young school teacher had been shoved out of a moving vehicle by her violently abusive husband. Afraid for her life and with nowhere safe to turn, the young woman came to Martha’s door for help. Finding no services in Johnson County for victims of domestic abuse, Martha organized community members creating a network of safe houses to shelter women and children in need. These first efforts were the beginning of SAFEHOME. Over time, as women learned that there was help available, the request for services grew. In 1984, a 15-bed facility was opened; in 1987, the shelter facility expanded to 29 beds. In August 2006, SAFEHOME moved into a new, 45-bed facility that provides one central location for expanded shelter, outreach counseling and administrative services.
About: SAFEHOME provides a healing atmosphere where survivors of domestic violence can gain inner strength, build self-esteem, explore options and establish a life free of violence. Through SAFEHOME’s shelter and community services, approximately 7,500 individuals each year receive the support they need to lead healthy, independent lives. Last year, SAFEHOME provided nearly 18,000 nights of safety for women and children fleeing violent homes.
