Sports Chiropractic Overland Park
The Overland Park fall soccer season is in full-swing and so is the season of soccer injuries. Our Overland Park KS chiropractic clinic has treated students and adults for soccer injuries during the past few months, but for every injury we treat, there is one we prevent. Our chiropractors specialize in sports chiropractic Overland Park – preventing soccer injuries, football injuries and all types of sports injuries.
Soccer actually has an injury rate that is half of American football, but since the nature of the game requires starting and stopping quickly, this can cause many injuries to occur. Most of these injuries can be placed in one of five categories:
- Sprains – Sprains occur when one or more of the ligaments (that connect bone to bone) stretch or tear. This injury can cause the joint to become unstable. Soccer players change direction frequently and pivot. This type of motion often causes ankle and knee sprains.
- Strains – Strains involve stretching or tearing of muscles and tendons. This often occurs when the athlete is in full stride and can cause pain and muscle spasms as well as limit range of motion.
- Bone Fractures – Bone fractures resulting from soccer usually occur in the lower leg, ankle and foot bones. A bone occurs when there is a break in the continuity of the bone.
- Overuse Injuries – Shin splints and Achilles tendinitis occur in soccer players due to overuse of the muscles and tendons. When the bone becomes weak from overuse, a stress fracture can happen.
- Head and Neck Injuries – Soccer players can experience neck sprains and concussions when they knock into another player or the goal post.
How to Prevent Soccer Injuries
- Get a sports physical before the season starts. Doctors at Fulk Chiropractic | Sports Chiropractic Overland Park offer sports physicals for just $1.00 in July/August each year. During this exam, the doctor will identify any areas of muscle weakness and offer recommendations for the upcoming season.
- Be more cautious when there are poor field conditions. Wet or uneven ground can cause more falls and slips because of the unexpected. Being more careful and aware of your surroundings can make a huge difference on the field.
- Maintain proper fitness. Gradually increasing mileage when running can reduce the liklihood of developing shin splints. After a period of inactivity, it’s important to gradually increase endurance through aerobic exercise and strength training.
- Warm up and stretch properly. Make time to go for a jog before each game or training session. This gives your muscles a chance to warm up. Remember to slowly stretch after each exercise. Hold the stretch. Do not bounce or strain the muscles.
