Lenexa’s Tails on the Trails Pet Festival will take place on Aug 10th, 2013 from 9am-1pm at the Ad Astra Pool and Park in Lenexa KS. The event will include pet demonstrations, vendors, a talent show and dog swims. A Lenexa Chiropractor from Fulk Chiropractic will be teaching the public how to properly lift a dog in and out of the tub for bathing without causing back pain.
Lenexa Chiropractor Provides Tips for Bathing Your Pet the Right Way
Our Lenexa chiropractors understand that not every pet owner can afford to pay a groomer, so many of us bathe our pets on our own. Unfortunately, this seemingly simple task can often cause severe injuries.
Common Injuries From Bathing Your Pet
- Back Injuries from lifting a heavy pet in or out of the tub
- Sprains or strains from wrestling an unruly dog (wet or dry)
- Low back injuries due to hunching over for extended periods of time (washing more then one dog)
The Right Way to Wash ‘Em
1. When lifting your dog into the tub, bend at your knees – keeping your back straight. Then stand straight up, walk over to the tub and gently set your pet down – keeping your back straight as you squat. To wash, sit on the floor just outside the tub instead of leaning over the tub.
2. If possible, you could teach your dog to walk up a ramp (or long board) to get into the tub by himself. This eliminates your work of lifting, altogether.
3. Shower Instead. It might feel silly to have both of you in the shower, but this allows you to bend at the knees without leaning over the tub.
